Now Live
Our full exhibition programme, including our public artworks, is now closed. Visitors can still enjoy art in person at FACT and Bluecoat until August & September.
Rashid Johnson presented a new outdoor sculpture, Stacked Heads (2020), a totem of two cast heads, made from bronze and furnished with plants. The heads are based on a series of drawings, Anxious Men (2015-ongoing), which evoke a sense of collective anxiety. Incorporating organic elements in his work, the plants which grow from within the sculpture – yucca and cacti – are selected for their endurance to harsh winds and saline water of the Mersey. The resilience of these plants and the location of the sculpture speak to the origins of present-day racial discrimination and violence – the transatlantic slave trade – of which Canning Dock was an early facilitator.
